What are the advantages of using LVDT's?

In Tension Control applications, load cells often see overloads that far exceed their specified rated capacities. These overloads are very common and are due to:

- Inertia of the moving rolls
- High line speeds
- Variations in force for the product being conveyed
- Rapid line accelerations

For this reason, calibration in many web tension applications takes place time and time again as the occurrences of overload require constant re-calibration of the load cell based systems.

Because of its mechanical design, an LVDT provides a much higher overload rating than that of typical strain-gage type load cells. While LVDT's do not provide the level of precision of strain-gage load cells, they do provide greater protection from damage due to overloads and are appropriate for this type of application.
